What is a psychiatrist? How can I benefit from Dr. Pelc’s services?

Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.” Dr. Pelc provides therapy and medication management to individuals with a wide range of problems, ranging from  stress, burnout, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and psychosis. What is a child psychiatrist?

Per the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, a child psychiatrist is “a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and the treatment of disorders of thinking, feeling and/or behavior affecting children, adolescents, and their families. A child and adolescent psychiatrist offers families the advantages of a medical education, the medical traditions of professional ethics, and medical responsibility for providing comprehensive care.”

Essentially, Dr. Pelc sub-specializes in working with children and adolescents, and their families, in diagnosing various mental health problems, and utilizes his medical training to appropriately diagnose and treat, with medications and/or therapy, a wide range of disorder. See the “Child and adolescent psychiatrist” article on the Facts and Articles for Families page!

Do I need to do anything before the first visit?
All potential patients are asked to call the office prior to the first visit for a free, brief telephone conversation. That way, Dr. Pelc can get a sense of what kind of help is needed, and whether he is a good fit. If he cannot provide the appropriate treatment, he will try and provide an appropriate referral. That way you don’t waste your time and money unnecessarily.
What can I expect at the first session?
A typical first session with an adult ages 21 and above includes a comprehensive evaluation that is usually an hour in length. A typical first session with a child and adolescent ages 17 and under or young adult ages 18 to 20 is 90 minutes and includes a comprehensive evaluation that includes meeting with either or both parents, and then with the child/adolescent or young adult. Towards the end of the session, we discuss the diagnosis and treatment recommendations, which may include therapy, medications, or both.
Do you take insurance?
Not at this time. Dr. Pelc is an out-of-network provider for all insurances. He can provide a “superbill” which can be submitted by the patient to the insurance company for reimbursement. This can range from 0 to 100%.
Are there any types of patients that you don't see?
As a solo psychiatrist, Dr. Pelc does not treat patients with active substance abuse disorders. He does not treat those with an active eating disorder, and refers them to eating disorder centers. A “whole team” approach that includes a psychiatrist, therapist, nutritionist, and others is indicated in certain conditions. Patients above the age of 55 are generally referred to a geriatric psychiatrist.
Do you have any subspecialty interests?
As a child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist Dr. Pelc sees kids ages 5 and above. He also sees adults. He especially enjoys treating depression, anxiety, ADHD, and insomnia, utilizing both medications and therapy. He utilizes sleep hygiene techniques in patients who don’t want sleeping medications or have already tried them and are still having sleep difficulties.
